  1. Hello?

  2. How about Minn and Wendell Anderson? Also appointed Muriel HUmphrey to replace Hubert around the same time.

    Comment by palinurus — July 27, 2005 @ 8:46 am

  3. Actually, Muriel Humphrey was appointed in January 1978, well after Anderson had himself appointed (in December 1976).

    Comment by Dominick — July 27, 2005 @ 9:13 am

  4. Palnurus congrats on Wendell Anderson and Minnesota. As Governor he arranged the appointment of himself as Senator when Walter Mondale was elected VP in 1976. Yes Humphrey died in January 1978 and Muriel Humphrey was appointed in his place. Muriel was a reluctant Senator and demos in Minnesota begged her to run in Nov 1978. The Anderson appointment was a looming disaster and every democrat in Minnesota would have loved to have Muriel Humphrey running besides that fall.

Yet Muriel H. said no and the democrats furthered splintered in the primary to replace her. The democrat ticket went down down in 1978. Anderson had won 62% of the vote in 1974, but could only manage 40% in 1978.

I did not ask it, but the other ambitious Governor was David Pryor of Arkansas. He ran against Senator McClellan in 1972 and was elected governor in 1974. When McClellan died in 1977 Pryor could hardly contain his ambition for the seat. Yet Pryor declined to appoint himself to the seat and rather chose Kenaster Hodges Jr. to be a caretaker Senator. Pryor ran for the seat in 1978 and after tough primaries won the seat and held it for 18 years. Then he kinda passed it on to his son Mark Pryor in 2002.
This is the right way to ascend to the Senate from the governship.

A further note on Keneaster Hodges from Arkansas. He went to Ivy league for undergraduate(Princeton), then Seminary, and then Law school. Unlike Al Gore he got both of his degrees with honors, but settled down quickly to practice law in Newport Arkansas. In 1974 he was part time there for the City and was Chaplin at the local Prison. Yet within four years he went from prison minister to US Senator. One just never knows what will happen.

  5. I recall a famous (& devastating!) comment about Senator Anderson, who had an unusually high absenteeism rate during his brief time in the Senate.

Said the wife of Anderson’s opponent, “You’d think since he appointed himself, he’d at least show up for work!”

    Comment by mnw — July 27, 2005 @ 10:12 am

  6. MNW Yes Anderson had a bad attendence rating in Washington as he was trying to meet everyone face to face in Minnesota to explain was why he quit one job to appoint himself to another.

    A can’t win situation.

    Comment by Ralph — July 27, 2005 @ 10:19 am

  7. Pryor just “kinda ” passed the seat to his son. Tim Hutchinson was elected to the seat for 1 term.

    Comment by Lewis Rexroad — July 27, 2005 @ 10:27 am

  8. Tim Hutchinson did hold that seat for one term. Senator Tim could have a been a lifer in the senate, but decided to have a senate wife over a senate life. Very sad.

Mark Pryor was elected Arkansas AG strictly based on being David Pryor’s son. Mark Pryor is nice a enough fella and has not disgraced his name. His success is pretty jumping on the family name and making any big mistakes.

So Pryor has just kinda picked up where his father left off. If Hutchinson did have his problems Pryor would probably be running for Governor this year.

  12. Go Duke, you were only right in 1 out of 2 areas; you said 5.3% unemployment rate.

I went over the June #, got the unemployment rate of 5% right, and hit the May #. So 2 out 3 beats 1 out of 2.

  13. Tina,
You missed the revised upwards number too? Just kidding, I don’t really care. I am just a housewife with a lucky guess. I wish you would post more than just once a month. I’m here alone with all of these men. Lisab is on some wild vacation.

  14. I will try, Go Duke. How’s the Pilot, should I buy one?

    Comment by Tina — July 27, 2005 @ 5:12 pm

  15. Tina,
I still love my Pilot. It is a good second car for the husband. It is not very functional with 4 kids to use everyday. Although if gas keeps going up, I might trade it in for a Yugo. Did you buy your house? How’s the worse ecomony since HH in SF?

    Comment by Go DUKE!!! — July 27, 2005 @ 5:24 pm

  16. Go Duke,

Yes, its still the worse economy since HH. You know median home prices are nearly $750k in SF. In Marin, they are over $800k.

    Comment by Tina — July 27, 2005 @ 5:44 pm

  17. How can people afford a house in CA ?

    Comment by Tim V — July 27, 2005 @ 8:14 pm

  18. and what are the school/property taxes like on a 750K house ?

    Comment by Tim V — July 27, 2005 @ 8:14 pm

  19. Depends if your Warren Buffet and bought the house in 1971 or a new owner.

The way prop 13 works is that property tax increases on your house are limited to 2% per year? So one house worth 7 million with one owner since 1974 pays X and another might pay 15 times that.

This has allowed peopel to stay in neighborhoods and benefit from the increased value of their house. Instead of being forced out of their house due to taxes.

My Aunt lives in Upper Westchester county in NY. She bought a very modest house on 9 acres in 1963. Her school taxes today are over 16K per year. She is a retired school worker and my uncle was a school teacher. As the value of their property has soared the taxes has climbed along with it. It takes about all her retirement pay to pay the taxes.

  20. Tina go you have a gdp prediction for Q3 and Q4 ?

    Comment by Tim V — July 27, 2005 @ 9:12 pm

  21. Unbelievable! Apparently, Patrick Fitzgerald is trying to expand the scope of his investigation of the Plame leak–which itself is a non-issue–into how the White House handled the intelligence on Iraq’s WMDs. Has anyone looked into the guy? His Rove witch hunt already had me thinking he was a Democrat hack with an agenda, but this pretty much confirms it.

How can a special prosecutor be removed?

What are your property taxes on your house in SF. I pay $4300.00 for a 3600 sq ft worth about 675K in MD. What is gas per gallon?

Lots of new names, some familiar ones.

    Anyone happen to remember me?

Hope all is well…I really need to make a return here to represent the Dems again. :)

Not that lately they deserve representation…

  33. “Oh the irony of Republicans complaining about a special prosecutor. Pinch me I must be dreaming.”

Cute. But the difference is, Starr was actually doing his job. Fitzgerald is going beyond the scope of what he was assigned to do.

    Comment by Real American — July 28, 2005 @ 7:09 am

  34. Starr also got 14 convictions, if I remember correctly. He probably would have gotten more if so many prospective witnesses hadn’t left the country suddenly.

  35. Tim V,

More of a libertarian now (I still love the pot ;) but otherwise you’re right on it…although I’ve never had a blog – not one for the written word! I did do an election site though.

I remember you, too. Nice to see you!

  36. Hello Alcon.

Go Duke, its 1% of the purchase price of the home. So if you paid 675k, your taxes would be at least $6,750. This does not include any special assessments/Fees which vary from city to city and county to county.

  37. I’m glad I live in MD!
